The institute specializes on addressing complex resilience problems in Somalia. SDRI in collaboration with The George Washington University’s Institute for Disaster and Fragility Resilience (GW/IDFR) are implementing in Somalia disaster resilience leadership educational program that offers both formal academic programs in disaster resilience leadership as well in service fellowship programs.

Somalia is not an exception of a world which continues to face more and intense disaster events of high negative impacts to the people, infrastructure and the environment. This Master program transfers a set of knowledge products aimed at addressing the leadership gap in disaster risk management (DRM).

The overall aim of the Master program is to develop a generation of disaster resilience leaders (DRL) as well as strengthen the capacity of existing leaders in the field of DRM.

The course specifically strengthens leadership and resilience competencies of participants to increase their effectiveness and involvement in disaster risk reduction and management and humanitarian assistance.

The course is designed as a modular programme with the duration of eighteen (18) months, involving eighteen (18) taught modules and a field practicum plus a dissertation.

The course is designed around seven domains including conceptual fundamentals of disaster resilience, resilience programming concept and application, resilience learning, resilience research, measurement and analytics, monitoring and evaluation in DRM, disaster resilience leadership and climate change, environment and health.

The Master programme is designed to target individuals with an interest in addressing issues of disaster risk through a community development focus. It is ideally suited for persons with a basic degree and who are into their early to mid-careers.

The Method of instruction is a weekend based with mandatory physical class attendance as well as virtual platform which gives the opportunity to learn through e-learning. The assessment covers compulsory course works and field project which will be done as well as a continuous assessment, face to face written and oral final exam to qualify for the postgraduate degree Master in Disaster Resilience Leadership and Humanitarian Assistance.

Who should apply?

The course is open to Somalis and non- Somalis who fulfill the admission requirements, applicants should possess a minimum of;

  • Bachelor Degree
  • Computer literate
  • Have regular internet access (not provided in this course)
  • Fluent in English
  • Have at least working experience in DRM related activities

Tuition Fees: 2000 USD.

  1. I have MBBh (bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery), so am i eligible to apply this masters digree?

    That’s my question, but I’m gonna say thank you people how to give us such great opportunities.
